1. The Sanguinaires Islands
If you take the tourist road of the same name from the center of Ajaccio, you'll discover superb sandy beaches and magnificent coves before arriving at the Sanguinaires islands, one of Corsica's must-sees.
This archipelago, made up of four magmatic rock islands, is a real gem. Its rich flora and fauna make it a natural area of ecological interest. The name "Sanguinaires" probably comes from the reddish color of the rocks at sunset, a sight that has inspired many poets and continues to fascinate Ajaccians and visitors alike.
2. The great spot of La Parata
Among the exceptional viewpoints in Pays d'Ajaccio, Pointe de la Parata was awarded the Grand Site de France label in 2017, in recognition of its commitment to the preservation and sustainable management of landscape heritage.
Dominating a rocky promontory, the Tour de la Parata offers a spectacular panorama, particularly at sunset. To get there, follow the signposted path on the Parata peninsula. Built in the 16th century to protect the Corsican coast from barbarian invasions, the tower retains vestiges of cannon embrasures on the second floor and loopholes on the second.
3. The view from the Douaniers trail
Close to Ajaccio, the Douaniers trail offers exceptional panoramic views of the sea and Corsica's wild coastline. The path links the Sanguinaires islands to Saint-Antoine beach, crossing the island's unspoilt coastline and typical maquis.
Along the way, you'll discover a geological curiosity: an imposing boulder, equipped with climbing holds, made of red porphyry rock, a cooled magma that recalls Corsica's volcanic origins.
Take advantage of your walk to pause and admire the view of the horizon and secluded coves.
4. The panorama of the Arinella plateau
The Bocca di l'Arinella hike takes you to the heights above Ajaccio, offering spectacular views of the Sanguinaires Islands. From this vantage point, you can also admire the Genoese towers of Isolella and Capo di Muru, as well as the Gravona valley and the peaks of Punta Ignascu.
The trail, which can be explored on foot or by bike, takes you first to the Lisa dam, a popular spot for frogs and ducks. Continue to the Arinella plateau for breathtaking panoramic views of the town, sea and mountains.
5. Panoramic view from Monte Gozzi
Around 30 minutes' drive from the center of Ajaccio, Monte Gozzi is an impressive rock rising 700 meters above sea level, offering panoramic views over the plain and Gulf of Ajaccio.
The trail is accessible and not very difficult, but families with young children and people prone to vertigo are advised to exercise caution. The hike begins at the Chapelle San Chirgu, just 5 minutes from the village of Appietto. On the way up, you'll pass a paraglider runway, an old sheepfold converted into a cottage, and the remains of Castellu di Gozzi, an 11th-century feudal castle.
6. The cascade of the bride's veil
40 kilometers from Ajaccio, on the road to Corte, the village of Bocognano invites you to discover the bride's veil waterfall. Nestled between the massifs of Monte d'Oro to the north and Monte Renoso to the south, this region is renowned for its natural beauty.
The site is not only the starting point for the Richiusa canyoning course, but also the location of this impressive 70-metre-high waterfall. Accessible after a hike through the maquis, the waterfall reveals all its splendor.
The name "Voile de la Mariée" (Bride's Veil) originates from the geological features of the area: water falling on the rocks evaporates under the effect of heat, creating the appearance of a veil. Another, more legendary explanation is that a beautiful young woman took refuge near a lake with healing powers, and an ogre, trying to catch her, dropped stones that carried the bride's veil in their fall.
7. Lake Bracca
Corsica is not limited to its beaches and the coastline of the Gulf of Ajaccio. Not far from Bocognano, Lac de Bracca reveals itself to hikers ready to climb the mountains. Nestled at an altitude of over 2,000 metres and sometimes reaching a depth of 8 metres, this lake is a veritable natural treasure of the Renoso massif.
Accessible only to experienced hikers, the route passes over the Scalella pass, known for its difficulty and steepness. Located at the foot of Punta Alla Vetta, Lake Bracca, less famous than Lake Vitalaca, is distinguished by its original horseshoe shape.
