🐾 Travelling with your pet by plane: our tips for a smooth flight ✈️

Are you going on vacation or business trip, but not without your faithful companion? Good news: traveling with a pet by plane is perfectly possible. Less good news: it can't be improvised 🐢🐱. Between formalities, transportation, comfort and well-being, it's best to plan ahead. With our practical advice, we'll guide you step by step to ensure your trip goes as smoothly for you as it does for your furry companion. Preparing a flight with a pet takes planning!

Basic rules to know before booking a flight

Before booking a flight, take a moment to check the specific specific conditions for transporting on board. At Chalair, we accept small pets in the cabin (up to a certain weight), provided they are carried in a suitable crate.

Beyond the question of weight, you also need to think about the size of the container, the animal's comfort and the regulations in force depending on the destination. For example, a flight to Corsica will not pose the same constraints as a flight to Northern Ireland.

The wisest choice? Contact us before booking to check feasibility.

The transport case: its cocoon for the flight

The crate is your companion's mobile home πŸ•. He must be able to stand up, turn around and lie down comfortably. It's also a regulatory requirement, especially if the animal travels in the cabin.

Remember to get your pet used to this crate before the big day. Leave it open at home with a few treats 🦴, his favorite toy 🧸 or a piece of clothing with your scent on it. This will help reduce his stress when the time comes.

Good to know: your pet 🐈 will have to stay in its crate for the whole flight. So it might as well be comfortable there!

Health formalities: no passport, no take-off!

Travelling means travel documents, and your pet is no exception. To prepare for air travel with pets, check that :

  • His vaccination record is up to date (particularly for rabies);
  • It is identified by microchip (compulsory to leave French territory);
  • It has a European animal passport issued by a veterinarian.

Internationally, additional rules may apply (veterinary certificates, quarantine periods, etc.). Find out more in advance, especially for destinations outside the EU. A visit to the vet at least 10 days before your flight is generally recommended.

D-Day: how can we make the most of our trip together? πŸ• ✈️

On the day of departure, stay zen 😌. Your pet can feel your stress πŸˆβ€β¬›.

Please plan ahead:

  • Arrive at the airport a little early to avoid last-minute stress;
  • A final walk before boarding (very important for him to relieve himself!);
  • A light pre-flight ration to avoid digestive discomfort;
  • A small absorbent underpad in the crate (just in case).

Avoid sedatives unless veterinary advice is given: they can have undesirable effects at altitude. Instead, rely on naturalness: a reassuring voice, presence and a familiar toy.

Good to know: on Chalair flights, our teams are trained to welcome travelers with pets. Don't hesitate to ask us about this at check-in ✈️ 🐾.

And once we reach our destination?

The journey doesn't end with the landing πŸ›¬. You also need to think about welcoming your pet on site. Is your accommodation pet-friendly? Do you have everything you need to feed, walk and entertain your pet?

If you're going on vacation, make the most of walking together. If you're away on business, make sure you spend some quality time with him, and why not arrange for him to stay with you for a while if your meetings drag on?

If in doubt, keep the contact details of a local veterinarian on hand.

At Chalair, we know that a pet isn't just luggage. It's a member of the family. That's why we do everything we can to make your trip as comfortable for you as it is for your pet.

Short regional flights, a warm welcome, clear and flexible conditions: everything you need to make your trip easier. Check out our destinations to plan your next getaway for two (or more!).

Preparing for air travel with pets requires a little forethought, but nothing insurmountable. By respecting the rules and taking care of your pet's comfort and well-being, you'll increase your chances of having a good time together.

So, ready to board with your favorite furball? At Chalair, we'll be waiting for you on board with a smile and a few pats for your companion if he agrees 🐾.
