🎒 Before takeoff: meticulous preparation
Minimum age for travel
Babies can generally travel by plane from the age of one week for short flights, but it's recommended to wait three weeks for long flights. However, every child is unique, and it's best to consult your pediatrician before planning a trip.
booking and seating
For children under the age of two, you have two options: have them travel on your lap, or reserve a seat with an approved restraint system. Some airlines offer cribs for infants, but the number is limited. It is therefore essential to book in advance.
Required documents
Make sure each child has valid identification. If the child is traveling with only one parent or guardian, an exit permit may be required. Check the specific requirements of your destination.
🧳 Luggage and essential equipment
Hand luggage
Prepare a dedicated bag for your child containing :
- A change of clothes
- Appropriate snacks
- Favourite toys or books
- Hygiene items (wipes, diapers, etc.)
Don't forget that baby liquids (milk, juice, etc.) are generally allowed in the cabin, but it's advisable to check the regulations in force.
Strollers and car seats
Most airlines allow free carriage of strollers and car seats. However, policies vary, so we recommend you consult your airline's specific conditions.
👶 In-flight comfort and entertainment
Managing ear pressure
Pressure changes during take-off and landing can be uncomfortable for children.
To mitigate these effects:
- Feed your baby (breast, bottle or teat)
- Offer candy or gum to older children
- Encourage them to yawn or drink water
These actions help to balance the pressure in the ears.
Keeping the kids busy
A busy child is a happy (and quiet) child. Plan age-appropriate activities:
- Books or magazines
- Electronic games or tablets with headphones
- Card and board games in travel format
Alternate activities to keep them interested throughout the flight.
🛬 On arrival: a smooth transition
Once at your destination, take time to acclimatize. Make sure your children stay hydrated and well rested. If you have connecting flights, allow enough time between them to avoid stress.
