1. The green lane
The greenway covers more than 17 km of riverbank, specially designed for outdoor activities. The route is ideal for hiking, running and mountain biking in complete safety.
The greenway crosses Brive-la-Gaillarde along the Corrèze river and has many points of interest, including :
- The Halle Brassens, where Brive's famous market takes place every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
- The Cardinal Bridge, built under the direction of Joseph Dubois, brother of Cardinal Guillaume Dubois, minister under the Regency.
- King's Island, named after Gondovald
The trails also stretch along the Vézère, allowing you to enjoy :
- The Saillant bridge, a 16th-century medieval structure
- The 28-metre-high Saillant hydroelectric dam
- The Saint-Viance bridge, with its three arches built entirely of local stone, and its Romanesque church, listed as a Historic Monument.
2. A section of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle from Collonges-la-Rouge to Turenne
On the Rocamadour route in Limousin and Haut-Quercy, the sentier des falaises is a variant of the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle that leads to Martel through the former Vicomté de Turenne.
The pilgrimage route passes through the atypical village of Collonges-la-Rouge, one of France's "Most Beautiful Villages". Let yourself be seduced by the colorful palette of this small town. Appreciate the red hues of the sandstone of the buildings and the blue-grey of the slate. The village also boasts a number of remarkable buildings, including the Saint-Pierre church with its Romanesque bell tower and the Pénitents Noirs chapel.
Once in Turenne, the Château is an exceptional site, testifying to the beauty of medieval architecture, and the Tour César offers a breathtaking panorama. Located 20 minutes from Brive-la-Gaillarde, the village is criss-crossed on both sides by several hiking trails.
3. Hiking trails around Lac du Causse
Located in the Vallée de la Couze, 15 minutes from Brive, Lac du Causse is a 200-hectare nature reserve. While the lake is ideal for a variety of water sports, the surrounding area offers numerous hiking trails for walkers, cyclists and trail runners.
The tour of the lake forms a 7 km loop that can be covered in 2 hours or more during a leisurely stroll. Other trails of varying degrees of difficulty are included in the Plan Départemental des Itinéraires de Promenades et de Randonnées.
Good to know: the Grande Randonnée de Pays du Causse Corrézien, a 48 km loop in the Corrèze department, also passes close to Lac du Causse.
4. Les Diligences, trail less than 6 km long
Starting from the Objat lake on the banks of the Loyre, this trail is less than 6 km long and is ideal for strolling through a wooded landscape.
Along the way, you can admire the old houses and narrow streets of the villages of La Roche and Charrieras, as well as the red sandstone dwellings of Saint-Cyr-la-Roche. Returning in the direction of Objat via Rue des Diligences, you take a lane overlooking the valley of the Mayne stream.
On Sunday mornings, this tour includes a visit to the Objat market to sample local specialities.
5. Planchetorte - Chevrecujols, 6 km trail
In the Brive region, this 8 km trail of moderate difficulty takes you to discover the Planchetorte valley. This listed, unspoilt site in the heart of the countryside features numerous caves in the sandstone walls.
In addition to these Paleolithic remains, the Planchetorte valley is also endowed with incredible biodiversity, including a rich and abundant flora.
6. Les Coteaux de Brignac, 12 km trail
Starting from Brignac-la-Plaine, this 12 km hiking trail forms a moderately-difficult loop that takes around 4 hours to complete. The Brignac hillsides walking and hiking trail invites you to discover the altarpiece, the round dovecote and the crosses, before setting off on the path towards Pauillac.
Points of interest along the way include views of the Château de Perpezac and the puy d'Yssandon. You'll also cross the Mansac plain and the Bois des Ages, offering splendid views.
7. The limestone hills loop, one of the great itineraries (GR) around Brive-la-Gaillarde
This 48 km route can be explored on foot, by bike or on horseback, and takes you through the exceptional landscapes of western Correze.
Admire the remarkable historic sites of the five communes you'll pass through, where mansions and châteaux make up a rich heritage. Stroll through the streets of the medieval town of Saint-Robert, listed as one of France's most beautiful villages.
