City Walks: Lyon, for Those with Strong Calves

Lyon is a city of hills. This detail, which looks charming on a postcard, quickly takes its toll on your legs. For an urban hike, head to Fourvière. From Old Lyon, the climb takes you to one of the most beautiful viewpoints overlooking the city. The route combines historic sites, stairways, narrow streets, gardens, and panoramic views. The Croix-Rousse offers a different atmosphere. Those who prefer a more leisurely stroll can follow the banks of the Saône or combine a visit to the Presqu’île, Vieux Lyon, and the riverbanks.

The great thing about Lyon is that it offers flexible itineraries: a leisurely 45-minute walk, a two-hour active stroll, or a full half-day of urban hiking.

Practical Tips for a Sports-Themed Trip to Lyon

Before you go, be sure to pack versatile, comfortable shoes. The cobblestone streets of Old Lyon, the stairs at Fourvière, and the riverbanks require a different kind of effort than a treadmill. A water bottle comes in handy, especially in the spring and summer.

Finally, avoid overloading your schedule. Lyon is perfect for an active yet balanced stay: a morning jog, an afternoon stroll, a bike ride to another neighborhood… not to mention a gourmet break to enjoy the city.
