A sturdy, discreet and easily identifiable piece of luggage is your best ally. Say goodbye to flashy suitcases or those without secure locks. Opt for a hard-shell model with a built-in TSA lock. Whilst this may not deter the most seasoned thieves, it’s still an effective first line of defence.
Also remember to personalise your suitcase (with a tag, coloured ribbon or discreet sticker) to avoid mix-ups on the baggage carousel and make it easier to identify if it goes missing. A simple trick, but incredibly effective.
🗝️ Should you lock your luggage?
Yes, but not just any old way. Standard padlocks can be cut off. It’s better to opt for suitcases with built-in TSA-approved locks, which are compatible with airport security checks without needing to be forced open.
Good to remember: a locked piece of luggage is not a safe. Avoid leaving valuables inside. Laptops, passports, jewellery, important documents… always keep these with you in the cabin.
👜 🎒 Organising your carry-on luggage effectively
A well-organised cabin bag means greater comfort and less stress. Use zipped pouches or compartments to separate essential items (documents, chargers, medication). Slip your bag under the seat in front of you rather than in the overhead compartment: it’ll be within sight, so less exposed to prying hands.
What if you’re travelling with a rucksack or an open tote bag? A zip fastening or a carabiner might be enough to deter prying eyes. The idea isn’t to live in a state of paranoia, but to stay smart.
✈️ At the airport: keep a close eye on your belongings
Thefts do occur in terminals or whilst boarding. Busy areas (queues, toilets, rest areas) are the most at risk. Always keep your luggage close to you, even if you’re just popping out for a quick coffee. Use a strap to secure your bag to your arm or to the handle of a chair. Does that sound excessive? ✈️ And during the flight? Keep your eyes peeled
Flying isn’t without its risks. There have been cases of luggage being rummaged through during the flight, particularly in the overhead luggage compartments. Put your personal belongings in a bag that you can slide under your seat.
If you need to stow a bag in the overhead compartment, place it in the one opposite you: that way, you’ll always be able to see it.
🧳 ❓Lost or damaged luggage: what should you do?
Despite all precautions, luggage can sometimes go missing. If you notice that your luggage is missing or damaged on arrival, report it immediately to the airport’s baggage service.
