Explore the historic district as if you were on a treasure hunt
To get children interested in visiting Brive's historic district, it's best to avoid long explanations and give them a mission instead.
Ask them to point out the Saint-Martin Collegiate Church, the historic houses, the turrets, the sculptures on the facades, and the narrowest alleys. The Brive market is a great way to introduce children to the cuisine of the Corrèze region without subjecting them to a never-ending meal at a restaurant.
It takes place in and around the Halle Georges-Brassens on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. The stalls change with the seasons, offering a variety of fruits, vegetables, cheeses, pastries, and local specialties.
To make the visit more fun, each family member can choose a food item to share during a picnic. The nearby Jardin de la Guierle features shaded paths and play areas for children.
Lose yourself in the maze at the Jardins de Colette
In Varetz, near Brive, the Jardins de Colette combine culture, nature, and outdoor play. The site traces the different regions where the writer Colette lived, but its main attraction for families is its huge butterfly-shaped maze.
This 5,000-square-meter trail is complemented by giant games, Mikado, dominoes, a forest of jingle bells, a vegetable garden, and a few animals. The floral park covers approximately five hectares.
Plan on spending half a day. This outing is especially suitable for children ages 4 or 5 and up, although older children usually enjoy it too.
Spend a day at Lac du Causse
When temperatures rise, head to Lac du Causse, located about 15 minutes from Brive-la-Gaillarde. It’s one of the most convenient places to enjoy a mix of relaxation, picnics, and physical activities.
Depending on the season and operating hours, families can enjoy swimming or try stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, pedal boating, rowing, and various other water activities.

Choose a short, kid-friendly hike
You don’t have to hike for 4 hours to enjoy the scenery of Corrèze. Enjoy family walks of less than 6 km, developed and maintained as part of the departmental hiking plan (PDIPR).
Choose the route based on the age of the youngest hiker, not the fittest member of the family. This simple rule will save you a lot of back-and-forth in the middle of the hike.
A small bag containing water, a snack, a cap, and a light jacket is usually all you need for these short walks.
Visit Collonges-la-Rouge and count the towers
You can spend half a day in Collonges-la-Rouge, famous for its purple sandstone houses. A complete tour of the village takes about 2 hours and allows you to see nearly 25 towers.
To get the children excited, suggest that they count the towers, take a picture of the reddest house, or find the market hall and its old communal oven.
Since the streets are sometimes steep or cobblestone, a baby carrier may be more practical than a stroller for toddlers.

A rainy day doesn't necessarily mean a wasted day. The Edmond-Michelet Museum, housed in the former family home of the Resistance fighter and statesman, regularly organizes guided tours and workshops for children.
The Labenche Museum, for its part, offers visitors the chance to explore the history of Brive and its region through 15 permanent exhibition halls. Family workshops are offered there at certain times, particularly during school breaks.
Brive also has movie theaters, an indoor swimming pool, an ice rink, a bowling alley, and several indoor recreational facilities.
